"The Impact of Open Journal Systems on a Mexican Journal"

was presented at the Public Knowledge Project conference on July 12, 2007 at the SFU Harbour Centre, Vancouver, Canada by Dr. Alejandro Cabello-Pasini, who is an editor of Ciencias Marinas, a bilingual (English and Spanish) peer-reviewed journal of marine sciences.

The journal has been published since 1974 by the University of Baja California, Mexico, and the printed version is distributed to 59 countries under a subscription and/or exchange basis.

In 2006 Ciencias Marinas launched an open-access electronic version using the Open Journal System software, and this has greatly increased the number of users. According to Dr. Cabello-Pasini, the number of users is currently increasing at a rate of approximately five per day and the number of manuscripts received has doubled since the electronic system was established.
